Learn Nach Yomi with the OU

In the Chofetz Chaim's sefer Machane Yisrael (39), where he discusses strategies for Jews who are in the army, the Chofetz Chaim urges us to learn important lessons from the verses in our chapter. After we learn of the Amalekites capturing and burning of Ziklag and taking all of the women and children captives, verse six reads, “David was very distressed for the people were ready to stone him for the soul of all the people was embittered, each over his sons and his daughters; but David drew strength from Hashem, his G-d.”

The Chofetz Chaim urges the soldiers to realize that even if they are greatly outnumbered in battle do not despair. As the verse in Tehillim (33) assures, “The king is not saved by a great army, nor is a hero rescued by great strength … behold, the eye of Hashem is on those who fear Him, upon those who await His kindness. To rescue their soul from death...” It is the trust that the soldiers have in Hashem that ultimately will be the primary ingredient in the success in battle. As the verses related regarding David after discovering the city of Ziklag burned and the women and children taken captive, “And David drew strength from Hashem, his G-d”. Immediately afterward, after seeking guidance from Hashem through the Urim V'tumim, Hashem responded that a victory would be in hand.

Since the Navi tells us that David first drew strength from Hashem and only afterward sought and received a guarantee of success, the lesson to be gleaned is that success was only assured through the strengthening of the trust and faith in Hashem.
