Rabbi Dr. Gidon Rothstein
Rabbi Dr. Gidon Rothstein received ordination from RIETS and a PhD in Judaic Studies from Harvard. He has served both as a congregational rabbi and in positions in education, most recently as Director of Judaic Studies Curriculum and Teacher Training at HAFTR/Machon haTorah. He was a founding editor of www.torahcurrent.org, a Torah-focused Web magazine.
His PhD dissertation showed that fifteenth-century commentators on Pirkei Avot initiated the idea of darshaning Avot, instead of seeking its plain meaning. He has written articles on the nature of the mitzvah of Talmud Torah, when the rishonim thought sunset occurred, the role of women in Judaism, and the role of non-Jews in Judaism. In addition, he has offered several series of email shiurim, many of them archived at www.rjconline.org, and some at www.rabbis.org.
Rabbi Rothstein's most recent writing focuses on Jewish fiction, the first example of which was Murderer in the Mikdash, a mystery set in the time of the third Beit HaMikdash. He is currently finishing a collection of stories that uses fiction to shed light on little-noticed aspects of Tanach.
Rabbi Rothstein is a well-known public speaker, having served as Scholar in Residence at many shuls, and having addressed many book clubs or other gatherings, either about his book or to give shiurim. He lives in Riverdale, NY with his wife and three children.
